How to Clean Window Screens

We all love those times of the year when the weather is just right, and you can open the windows to feel the refreshing breeze roll through. But wouldn’t it be nice to open those windows and not be looking through dirty window screens? The screens in your windows are meant to catch any debris or bugs that may be trying to sneak in, so they can get a little (or a lot of) grime built up. If your home is full of dirty window screens, the view to the outside might look a bit hazy, and if they are exceptionally filthy, it could even prevent some of that lovely breeze from getting through. Here are some tips on how to get your window screens clean.

GATHER SUPPLIES

You will want to have the right tools on hand to clean your window screens. We recommend a soft-bristled brush or microfiber towel and handheld vacuum to get the larger pieces of dirt or leaves off the screen as well as a sponge, a bucket filled with soap and water, and a garden hose.

GET ORGANIZED

It is helpful to make a plan for how you will go about cleaning the window screens. To get the job done right, you will want to remove the screens from each window first so that the dirt and debris from the screens don’t just end up on your window. If you have an open area outdoors, such as a yard, patio, or driveway, this is an ideal place to get set up. If you have tarps or towels available, laying those out on the area will help keep the screens from collecting any new dirt while they dry.

*Pro Tip: if you are cleaning several screens of varying sizes, it may be wise to label them with some tape and a marker so you can reinstall them without guessing where each screen belongs.

Time to Clean

  1. Vacuum or Brush

Start by laying all of the screens out flat on the tarp or towels. Use the handheld attachment portion of your vacuum to gently remove any of the loose dirt, leaves, pollen and spider webs. Be sure to flip each screen over to get both sides. If you aren’t able to use the vacuum, a soft-bristled brush or microfiber towel should do the trick! Gently brush entire screen to loosen dirt and debris.

  1. Spray

Using the garden hose, spray the screens to further loosen dirt and prep it for the soap to be more effective.

  1. Scrub

Dip your brush or a sponge in the bucket of soapy water and begin to agitate the surface of the screen using circular motions. Be mindful not to push too hard when scrubbing, so you don’t accidentally damage the screen, especially if it is an older, more brittle screen.

  1. Rinse

Rinse each screen thoroughly and repeat the scrubbing portion if your screens are extra dirty.

  1. Dry

Lay your screens flat to dry on the towels or tarp. If you don’t have those items available, feel free to lean the screens against the outside of your house. If they need a little help drying, use a clean towel to wipe the frames of the screen. The screen itself should dry relatively quickly.

Reinstall Screens

Remember when we suggested labeling your screens? That should be coming in handy right about now. Simply place each screen back into its rightful window and marvel at the difference a good scrub and rinse makes!
